A food truck business in Dubai needs three things before it sells a single burger: a Dubai trade licence with a food activity, a licensed kitchen that supplies the truck, and a Dubai Municipality permit for each event or fixed site. Press reports put the municipality permit at Dh160 to Dh180 per event. The real money goes into the kitchen and the truck build.
That order matters. Most people start by pricing trucks, but Dubai treats a truck as an extension of a food business that already holds a licence. So the kitchen, the permits and the menu decide whether the numbers work. This guide walks through each piece, what it costs, and where trucks are actually allowed to trade.
Can you run a food truck business in Dubai?
Yes, but not the way food trucks work in London or Los Angeles. Dubai Municipality has said that trucks may not roam the city selling food, and may not park and sell on roads, parks or beaches without permission, as Gulf News reported. Trucks trade at approved events, at venues approved for a function organiser, or at a fixed site with a contract from the owner.
The other difference is who can apply. Food truck permits go to licensed food establishments in Dubai with an inspection grade of A, B or C and no critical or major violations, according to Khaleej Times in 2024. In practice that means a restaurant, cloud kitchen or caterer adding a truck, much like opening a second location, or a new business that sets up a licensed kitchen first.
What licences and permits does a food truck need in Dubai?
Plan for four approvals, roughly in this order. If you are starting from scratch, our UAE restaurant opening checklist shows where the licence and tax registrations fit in the timeline.
A Dubai trade licence with a food activity
The truck trades under a mainland Dubai trade licence that includes a food activity. If you already hold a restaurant licence, the municipality's permit for a fixed site uses a branch licence for the truck's location instead of a new company.
A licensed kitchen behind the truck
Every truck needs a licensed kitchen and licensed suppliers that can source, store and prepare food safely. Dubai Municipality's stated position has been that raw preparation happens in the main kitchen and only final preparation happens on the truck, such as heating, grilling or frying ready-made items. Rules get updated, so confirm what your permit allows before you design the menu.
A Dubai Municipality food truck permit
There are two kinds. An event permit covers one event and has to be filed at least three working days before it starts. An annual permit covers a truck that stays at one approved site all year, and needs a contract with the site owner plus the site approvals. Applications go through the Dubai Municipality website, and both the truck and the kitchen that supplies it have to be registered with the municipality.
The truck itself
The vehicle has to be registered with the RTA, and the fit-out has to meet the food safety basics the municipality has listed for trucks: cleanable, non-absorbent surfaces, proper ventilation and lighting, a double sink near the prep area, and separate space for packaging. Gas, electrics and fire safety are where builders' quotes differ most, so ask what they have already had approved.

How much does a food truck cost in Dubai?
There is no honest single number, because the biggest swing is whether you already own a licensed kitchen. A restaurant adding a truck pays for the vehicle and the permits. A new operator pays for a kitchen as well, and that is usually the larger bill. Budget for these lines:
- The licensed kitchen: rent, fit-out and its own licence, unless you already run one
- The truck: the vehicle, the food-grade fit-out, gas and electrics, and RTA registration
- The trade licence, renewed every year
- Municipality permits: Dh160 to Dh180 per event in press reports, or an annual permit for a fixed site
- Event pitch fees, charged as a flat fee or a share of sales
- Staff, food safety training, insurance, packaging and card fees
Run the numbers per event, not per month. A weekend market with a pitch fee and two staff has to clear its costs from one menu in a few hours, so know the food cost of every item before you sign. Our guide to calculating food cost percentage shows how to set it.
Where can food trucks operate in Dubai?
Three kinds of places, all with permission:
- Events and festivals, where the organiser holds the event approval and you file a truck permit for that event
- Fixed sites on private land, such as a mall, beach club or business park, with the owner's contract and an annual permit
- Venues approved for a function organiser, for private events and catering
The cool months, roughly October to April, are when outdoor markets and festivals run. Plan the year around them, and treat summer as the season for indoor sites, private catering and maintenance.
What should a food truck menu look like?
Short, fast and built around final preparation. Five to eight items is plenty for one window and two people. Pick dishes that are mostly prepared in the kitchen, finished on the truck in under three minutes, and that hold up in the heat and in a takeaway box.
Price every item from its recipe cost, not from what the truck next to you charges. Event fees come off the top, so a dish that works at a 30% food cost in a restaurant can lose money at a festival.
The truck is the cheap part. The kitchen behind it and the per-event fees decide whether you make money, so I'd cost every item and every event before signing for a vehicle.
How do you run service from a food truck?
At an event you are taking orders, payments and stock decisions at speed, often on a weak connection. A few habits keep the queue moving:
- Take cards on a terminal linked to your restaurant POS software, and keep cash as a backup
- Let guests scan a QR code to order and pay while they wait, so the window only hands out food
- Load the truck against a stock count, and count again when it returns so your restaurant inventory stays accurate
- Bring your own 4G router, because event Wi-Fi rarely survives a busy evening
We built Quickbuy so a truck can run as its own branch in the same account as your kitchen. You copy the dishes and ingredients you choose from the main kitchen, guests order through a takeaway QR code, and it works with Network International N-Genius card terminals. Stock you send out can be logged as a transfer, and the truck gets its own sales dashboard and P&L. If you're still choosing hardware, our guide to POS machines in the UAE explains what a card machine does and doesn't do.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a food truck cost in Dubai?
It depends mostly on whether you already have a licensed kitchen. Budget for the truck and its fit-out, a trade licence, municipality permits (reported at Dh160 to Dh180 per event), pitch fees and staff. A new operator also pays for a kitchen, which is usually the biggest cost.
Do you need a licence for a food truck in Dubai?
Yes. You need a Dubai trade licence with a food activity, a licensed kitchen supplying the truck, and a Dubai Municipality permit for each event or an annual permit for a fixed site. The vehicle also needs RTA registration.
Where can food trucks operate in Dubai?
At approved events, at venues approved for a function organiser, and at fixed private sites with the owner's contract and an annual permit. Dubai Municipality has said trucks can't roam or sell on roads, parks or beaches without permission.
Can you cook on a food truck in Dubai?
Dubai Municipality's stated position has been that raw preparation stays in the licensed main kitchen and the truck handles final preparation, like heating, grilling or frying ready-made items. Check the conditions on your permit, since the rules are updated.
Start with the numbers, then buy the truck
A food truck in Dubai is a small branch of a licensed food business, with a short menu and a calendar of events. Line up the kitchen, licence and permits first, cost every dish, and the truck becomes the easy part. When you're ready to set up ordering and payments, see Quickbuy's plans and pricing.
